And though Halloween might be quickly approaching, you’ve still got time to find a costume to tell your story.
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which lends itself to a full weekend of parties, local festivals and jamborees, trick-or-treating and other fun. And with both young and old planning costumes for the spooky season — from superheroes to princesses to classic horror characters to humorous sight gag themes — Halloween can be big business.
According to a recent report from the National Retail Federation, national Halloween spending by consumers is set to top $13.5 billion this year. Of that total, about $4.4 billion is estimated to be spent on costumes.
Many folks have likely already planned their outfit for Halloween. But if you haven’t, fear not. There are several places across the Midlands where you can get those masks, wigs, fake blood and more. While this certainly is not an exhaustive list of each and every place you can find a costume, here’s a look at a few spots in the Columbia and Lexington area.

The big national Halloween costume player is, of course, Spirit Halloween. The spooky season superstores have become ubiquitous nationwide through the years. So much so that, when a big box store — like a furniture store, a toy store, a big clothing retailer, etc. — closes its doors, the joke is that a Spirit Halloween will be moving in shortly after. Memes aside, Spirit Halloween does have an impressive array of costumes, masks, decorations, animatronics, costume accessories and more. Below is a list of Midlands area Spirit Halloween locations, as noted on its website.
- 3315 U.S. 176, Columbia.
- 1270 Bower Parkway, Columbia.
- 5422 Forest Drive, Columbia.
- 240 Forum Drive, Columbia.
- 1228 Wilson Road, Newberry.
Another spot that offers similar vibes to Spirit is Halloween Express, which has locations across the U.S. and South Carolina. In the Midlands, there’s a Halloween Express at 1170 S. Lake Drive in Lexington County’s Red Bank area. The shop carries a full selection of costumes for men, women and children, from major comic book characters to scary demons to sci-fi favorites and beyond.
Meanwhile, the Glo Room at 4325 Augusta Road in Lexington, not far from the Barnyard Flea Market, has long been a unique spot to look for a Halloween costume. On the shop’s Facebook page they tout a “unique costume collection, not just packaged items,” and note they have offerings for kids and adults, with plus sizes available. The shop also carries lingerie, hosiery and other types of costumes.
