In March, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end bought a $5.35 million estate with an eight-bedroom mansion on the shores of Lake Erie —just miles from his childhood home of Cleveland Heights. The Wall Street Journal reported the purchase Tuesday.

Built in 1895, the home has an interesting pedigree — it was owned at one point in its history by the president of Sherwin-Williams Co., according to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. And an episode of the 1960s hit show “Route 66” was filmed in the mansion.

Cleveland Historical said the village of Bratenhal, where the mansion is located, is bordered on three sides by the city of Cleveland and the other is Lake Erie.

The Agency Cleveland shared this description of the home in a YouTube post: “Situated on 3.5 acres along the Bratenahl coast of Lake Erie, this gilded-age grande dame underwent an extensive year-long transformation where the greatest of care was taken to bring the home into the 21st century. From the newly built bluestone patio and pool to the meticulously restored original door hardware, no detail was overlooked in perfecting this exquisite property.”

The estate is close to a private airport, according to Realtor.com, convenient for a couple that’s always on the move.

Swift herself is a known collector of real estate who seems to prefer homes with history.

Architectural Digest has noted her vast real estate holdings have over the years included a $2 million duplex penthouse and a $2.5 million Greek Revival, both in Nashville, her $17.75 million Rhode Island estate on the ocean and a home in Manhattan’s trendy Tribeca neighborhood.

The Ohio estate has features that Swift appears to fancy — a grand staircase, an elegant dining room (with a butler’s pantry) for entertaining and a pool.

Massive fireplaces, wainscoting, beamed ceilings with plaster designs, leaded glass French doors and an observatory with an amber glass skylight bespeak the home’s 20th-century pedigree.

The black walnut double staircase in the center hall foyer has carved lions.

Trivia: During Prohibition, the home’s ballroom was a speakeasy.

The house was designed in 1902 by Chicago architect Jarvis Hunt with gardens, stables and several buildings on the sprawling grounds — including a gardener’s cottage. Hunt gained fame for designing Union Station in Kansas City and a building at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

For the home now owned by Kelce and Swift, he designed an imposing and impressive front entrance with brick columns framing a large front door with wrought iron hinges.

“The exterior design is symmetrical, with an imposing central entrance with carved pediments supported by brick columns that frames a large front door with wrought iron hinges,” Case Western Reserve University noted. “The façade is framed by terracotta coping at the corners with a large, enclosed porch. An elaborate dormer dresses the roof line. The front facade had stone castellations typical of Tudor and Gothic Revival styles. The outside of the home also features double-hung windows and four elaborate brick chimneys.”

Over the years the home has been updated for modern living. The spacious, all-white kitchen has two islands, perfect for rolling out all that sourdough Swift has been baking of late.

Taylor Swift’s love of historical homes

Swift has proven to be a careful steward of architectural history.

In March 2024, after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl and during a break from her Eras Tour, the couple decamped to the historic Beverly Hills estate Swift bought in 2014 and renovated.

The mansion was built in 1934 by the late movie producer Samuel L. Goldwyn Sr. Swift bought it for a reported $25 million in 2015 when ABC News declared her the “proud owner of a piece of movie history.”

Swift received a landmark designation for the seven-bedroom home and oversaw a meticulous restoration of many areas, including the pool.
