Richland deputies responded to MUSC at 120 Gateway Corporate Boulevard around 8:40 a.m. Friday, where medical staff told investigators the child had substantial injuries, including lacerations, multiple head injuries that caused internal bleeding and burn marks that appeared consistent with contact with a lit smoking material, according to a news release.
Investigators identified the women as Zokeiyah Wyshan McCray and Helen Shanine Benbow.

Authorities said McCray, the child’s godmother, and Benbow, McCray’s mother, had been the child’s legal guardians and sole caregivers since May. They lived with the child in the same apartment, the release said.
Both women were booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Each faces one count of homicide by child abuse and was scheduled to appear in Bond Court at 2 p.m. Saturday.
