A Bishopville nurse has been arrested after investigators accused her of obtaining prescription pain medication from five residents at a Camden long-term care facility, according to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.

Joanne Claus, 70, faces five counts each of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, according to a news release.
Investigators with the Attorney General’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud Unit and the South Carolina Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Drug Control allege Claus used misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception or subterfuge to obtain hydrocodone/acetaminophen, a Schedule II controlled substance, from residents of Karesh Long Term Care and Rehab, the release said.

The alleged incidents occurred between April 11 and July 1, 2026, according to the release.
Each exploitation charge carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000 or both. Each drug fraud charge carries a potential penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000 or both.

Claus was booked into the Kershaw County Detention Center.
The Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.
