Lawnmower rider killed in crash with SUV, South Carolina officials say

A man who was riding a lawnmower was killed Saturday in a crash with an SUV, according to South Carolina officials.

David Brian Gossett Sr., a 69-year-old Easley resident, is the lawnmower driver who died, Pickens County Coroner Andrew Wilson said.

At about 9:15 a.m., Gossett was riding a lawnmower in the 800 block of Jim Hunt Road in Easley, according to the coroner’s office. The lawnmower left a private driveway and entered the road, where it was hit by a Hyundai SUV that was driving south on Jim Hunt Road, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Gossett was ejected from the lawnmower and thrown into the road, according to the coroner’s office.

The drivers of both vehicles were hurt and taken to a hospital in Greenville, where Gossett died, the coroner’s office said. Further information on the SUV driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the SUV driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Hours earlier, there was another fatal wreck in Pickens County.

At about 3 a.m., the coroner’s office said it responded to a single-vehicle collision in the area of 435 Gentry Memorial Highway in Easley. Logan Matthew Riebe, a 24-year-old Mauldin resident, suffered multiple blunt force injuries when the motorcycle he was riding crashed, according to the coroner’s office.

Riebe was wearing a helmet, the coroner’s office said. Information about the crash was not available, but it’s being investigated by the Highway patrol and coroner’s office.

Through June 7, at least 363 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least nine people have died in Pickens County crashes this year, and 16 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
