Two people killed and another hurt in overnight shooting, SC police say

Three people were shot, and two of them died, overnight on the Fourth of July holiday weekend in South Carolina, according to the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, officers responded reports of a shooting in the 500 block of Solomon Street, police said in a news release. When they arrived in the area near Exit 71 on I-20, officers encountered a large group of people then found the three shooting victims, according to the release.

Two victims died at the scene, police said. The Saluda County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify those victims after notifying their families.

The third victim was taken by Lexington County EMS to an area hospital with what police called non-life-threatening injuries. Further information on the surviving victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the shooter, or shooters, and the number of people involved was not available. There was no word about a motive for the gunfire.

No arrests have been reported in what police called an active investigation. In the release that was posted on social media just before 5 a.m., police said officers were processing the scene, conducting interviews and following leads in the double homicide investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit tips online.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.

Police said they will release more information when it’s available, so long as it does not compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
