Laundry room fire in apartment complex leaves 5 without a home, SC officials say

A Monday morning fire at an apartment complex in South Carolina has left five people without a place to live, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

At about 10:15 a.m., crews responded to calls about a fire Wildewood South Apartments off of Sparkleberry Lane, fire department officials said in a news release. That’s near the intersection with U.S. 1/Two Notch Road in the northeast area of Columbia.

Firefighters could see smoke coming from a first floor unit in one building and surrounding apartments were evacuated, according to the release.

After entering the building, firefighters located the fire in the laundry room of the apartment and extinguished it, officials said.

All occupants of the building made it out safely and there were no injuries, according to the release.

Information about the extent of the damage to the building was not available, but officials said that five people were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Richland County Fire Marshal. Officials did not say if foul play was suspected.

Multiple units responded to the burning building, along with Richland County EMS.
