One person has died and another has been arrested following a shooting in the Columbia area.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department said in Monday release that it has arrested Alphonzo D. Ray, 33, and charged him with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Ray was being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center as of Monday afternoon.

Deputies responded at about 5 a.m. Aug. 2 to the 6600 block of Shakespeare Road in reference to a shooting. When they got there, deputies found a male victim who had been shot in the lower body, the department said in the release. The victim was taken by EMS to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the department said.

The deceased had not been publicly identified as of Monday afternoon.

Investigators said Ray and the victim knew each other and were having a conversation on Shakespeare Road. An argument ensued, and the suspect shot the victim in the lower body, the sheriff’s department said.

Ray was arrested at about 9 p.m. Aug. 2 by the sheriff’s department’s fugitive task force.
