Man is killed and woman charged with murder, South Carolina officials say

A South Carolina man was shot and killed over the weekend and a woman was charged with murder, officials said.

Douglas James Nelson, a 63-year-old Pickens resident, was identified as the homicide victim, according to the Pickens County Coroner’s Office.

In addition to murder, 33-year-old Soshinque Barney White was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 5:40 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office said it received a 911 call about a man who had been shot in the 100 block of Big Foot Road in Pickens. Information from the 911 call indicated the caller was involved, according to the sheriff’s office.

At the Big Foot Road home, deputies found Nelson, who had been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s office said. Despite lifesaving efforts performed by emergency responders, Nelson died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

No other injuries were reported.

An autopsy will be performed on Nelson, who had been shot at least once, the coroner’s office said.

White was identified as the suspected shooter and brought to the C. David Stone Law Enforcement Center for questioning after she was located, according to the sheriff’s office. White was charged and booked into the Pickens County Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said.

No bond was set for White and she remains behind bars, jail records show.

There was no word about a motive for the shooting, but the sheriff’s office said that Nelson and White were familiar with each other.
