U-Haul released a midyear national report on its customers’ migration trends covering the past 12 months. Roughly half of all residential moves occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to U-Haul. And the trends show America’s older generations are flocking to the Southeast, especially South Carolina.
Here’s what U-Haul’s national report reveals about who’s moving to the Palmetto State:
South Carolina’s growth
South Carolina recorded the fastest population growth of any state at 1.5% last year, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. The majority of growth comes from domestic migration, when people move from one state to another.
South Carolina’s fastest growing counties are in the Lowcountry and Upstate. Jasper County is not only the fastest growing in South Carolina, it is the second fastest in the country, according to World Population Review. Three other counties, Horry, Berkeley and Lancaster counties are also in the top 50.
Who’s moving here?
South Carolina is a top three destination for both Baby Boomer and Generation X movers, according to the report. Baby Boomer’s top destination is South Carolina, taking the first spot over North Carolina in second and Florida in third. Gen X prefers Florida and Texas, but South Carolina falls third.
The report also breaks down moves to the metro-area level. The Myrtle Beach metro took second place for Baby Boomers with the Charleston metro not far behind in fourth. Gen X prefers the Charleston metro, which took second place.

The report’s trends align with county growth. Berkeley County is within the Charleston metro, and Horry County is within the Myrtle Beach metro.
America’s older generations are coming to South Carolina for retirement or for the winter, according to the report. South Carolina’s warm summers and mild winters are likely appeals for retirees.
What about younger generations?
America’s younger generations aren’t coming to South Carolina as much, but aren’t avoiding the Southeast entirely. Millennials’ top destination is Florida, followed by Texas and California. Generation Z prefers Texas, followed by California and New York.
Millennials appear to prefer the Midwest over the Southeast, according to the report. Gen Z is moving to dense markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast for college, entry-level jobs and apartment access, according to the report.
Charlotte, North Carolina is the seventh most popular metro area for Gen Z. The Charlotte metro extends into South Carolina and may account for the growth of Lancaster County, which borders the city.
