A 49-year-old Prosperity man was taken into custody early Friday morning after a three-and-a-half-hour standoff with law enforcement, where the man destroyed a drone and assaulted a police K-9, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said.

Christopher Dale Dameron was wanted for questioning after a hit-and-run crash on Seibert Road. When a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper and a Newberry County Sheriff’s deputy went to Dameron’s house about 10 p.m. Thursday, he pointed a gun at them, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies unsuccessfully tried to negotiate with Dameron for more than two hours. Law enforcement used a drone during the incident, but Dameron knocked it out of the air and destroyed it, the sheriff’s office said.
Law enforcement then used chemical munitions to force Dameron out of the house. But Dameron tried to evade police and retreat back to his house. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division then used a K-9 to keep Dameron from reentering his house. Dameron allegedly assaulted the K-9 causing minor injuries to the police dog.

Eventually law enforcement took Dameron into custody at 1:30 a.m. Friday.
Dameron has been charged with reckless driving, hit-and-run with property damage, pointing and presenting a firearm, malicious injury to property in excess of $2,000, and assault on a law enforcement animal, pursuant to the new South Carolina law.
Several Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputies were treated at the scene by Newberry County EMS, Lake Murray Rescue and Fairview Fire Department for exposure to the chemical munitions, the sheriff’s office said.
“You just cannot point a weapon at a law enforcement officer and resist arrest. We are grateful for SLED and their K9,” Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said. “Without their assistance, this situation may have turned out much worse.”
