Driver killed in collision with truck on popular road in Columbia, SC cops say

One person died after being involved in a crash on a popular Richland County road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 9:25 p.m. on Aug. 14, Master Trooper William Bennett said Tuesday in a news release.

A 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was driving west on Clemson Road, in the northeastern part of Columbia near the Village at Sandhill shopping center, according to Bennett. At the intersection with Rhame Road the Harley-Davidson collided with a 2014 GMC Sierra that was driving east on Clemson Road and turning left at the intersection, Bennett said.

The Harley-Davidson rider was hurt and taken to an area hospital, and later died there, according to Bennett. Information about when the motorcycle rider died was not available.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Harley-Davidson rider.

Bennett said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet or if the pickup driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 534 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 40 people have died in Richland County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
