The collision happened Sunday in Sumter County, Master Trooper William Bennett said Wednesday.

Both a 2025 Buick Envista and a Coleman mini bike were driving south on Cane Savannah Road, near Shaw Air Force Base, according to Bennett. At the intersection with Eagle Road the Buick driver attempted to pass the mini bike, but the vehicles collided, Bennett said.

The mini bike driver was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia and died there Monday, according to Bennett.

The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the mini bike rider.

Bennett said that the Buick driver — who was the only person in the car — was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the mini bike rider was wearing a helmet or if the Buick driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

At least 14 people have died in Sumter County crashes this year, and 25 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
