For some, a favorite food depends heavily on where they’re located because of the memories, culture and nostalgia associated with it.

To determine the most nostalgic summer foods in each state — the dishes that transport you back to your childhood home — A Mission for Michael created a survey and polled more than 3,000 people.

The group asked respondents to name their favorite foods that provide the strongest sense of comfort and belonging to their home state.

“Food has a remarkable ability to connect people with a particular place, person or period in their lives,” says Anand Meta, the Executive Director at A Mission for Michael. “These findings show that a familiar summer dish can offer much more than enjoyment in the moment. It can restore a sense of belonging, preserve family traditions and provide a small but meaningful source of comfort when somebody is far from home.”

Additionally, they asked people what feeling they most strongly associated with their favorite summer comfort food. Happiness was the most common answer, followed by memories of home and childhood.

#1. Peach Cobbler

The majority of respondents from SC said peach cobbler was the most nostalgic summer food in the Palmetto State, and for good reason.

It’s a Southern staple that’s hard not to be reminiscent of, even if you’re not the biggest fan of peaches. Bring some peach cobbler to a family gathering and slap some ice cream on top of the flaky, golden peaches, and you’ll be a fan favorite for the rest of the night.

Peaches reach their sweetest point during the summer, making it the perfect time to create a delicious sweet peach treat.

#2. Shrimp & Grits

Along SC’s coastal cities, seafood is taken much more seriously. While there are plenty of different dishes inspired by the ocean to choose from, shrimp & grits was chosen as the 2nd most nostalgic food in SC.

Shrimp & grits is especially popular in the Lowcountry, and with its creamy and juicy flavors, often served with bacon, sausage or gravy, it’s solidified itself as a meal that represents some of the best parts of SC.

#3. SC mustard-based pulled pork

There would be something wrong if barbecue wasn’t on this ranking. Specifically, respondents from SC said that Carolina mustard-based pulled pork is one of the most nostalgic foods of the state.

Slow-cooked until tender, the meat is dressed with a golden sauce that balances sharpness, sweetness and smoke, then piled onto plates or buns with slaw and other cookout sides, according to their press release.
