Search for driver after woman killed in hit-and-run crash, SC police say

A search is underway for a driver who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash over the weekend in South Carolina, according to the Cayce Police Department.

At about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to the 1800 block of Frink Street after a Cayce woman who was walking in the area was struck by an unknown vehicle, police said Monday in a news release. That’s in a part of Lexington County between U.S. 321 and the 12th Street Ext.

The pedestrian, who police said died because of the collision, has not been publicly identified by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Along with police, members of the South Carolina Highway Patrol and coroner’s office are investigating the deadly wreck. That includes reviewing surveillance footage as well as collecting and analyzing evidence to identify the vehicle and driver involved, according to the release.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has information about it, is asked to call police at 803-550-9536, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.

“Even information that may seem insignificant could help investigators piece together what happened,” police said in the release.

Through Sunday, 558 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 18 people have died in Lexington County crashes this year, and 40 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.

“Our thoughts are first and foremost with the victim and her loved ones as they navigate this devastating loss,” Cayce Police Chief Bruce Wade said in the release. “Our investigators are working diligently to identify the vehicle and driver responsible. We are asking anyone with information, no matter how small they may think it is, to come forward and help us bring answers and accountability to this family.”
