Master Deputy Tashawn Moore is recovering after a passing driver crashed into his marked patrol vehicle from behind following a traffic stop, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday in a news release.

Information about where in Kershaw County and when the crash happened was not available.

Moore had completed the traffic stop and was finishing administrative paperwork inside his stationary patrol vehicle — with blue emergency lights fully activated — when an approaching driver struck the rear of the patrol vehicle, according to the release.

Both the deputy and the other driver were taken to a local hospital, the sheriff’s office said. While further information about their conditions was not available, the sheriff’s office said that both individuals are expected to make a full recovery.

No other injuries were reported.

Shakyla Kieyonda Washington, a 34-year-old from Sumter, was identified as the other driver, according to the release.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the wreck and is leading the investigation, the sheriff’s office said. Subsequently, Washington was charged with DUI, driving under suspension and endangering emergency service personnel, according to the release.

Washington was booked into the Kershaw County Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said. No bond has been set and she remains locked up, jail records show.

“I am glad God was with our deputy last night,” Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan said in the release. “This is just a grim reminder of the dangers our deputies deal with on any given day.”
