Argument leads to shooting and ‘senseless loss of life,’ Columbia police says

An overnight argument in South Carolina turned deadly when a gun was involved, according to the Columbia Police Department.

The shooting happened at the North Pointe Estates apartment complex, police said Tuesday in a news release. That’s at 100 Ripplemeyer Ave., in a part of Columbia between S.C. 277 and the junction of Two Notch Road and Beltline Boulevard.

Information about when the shooting occurred was not available.

Officers believe the shooting occurred following a verbal altercation, according to the release. The victim, who was not publicly identified, died from the injuries suffered in the shooting.

Information about why there was an argument, if the shooter and victim knew each other prior to the gunfire, and the number of people involved, was not available.

No arrests have been reported in the death that continues to be investigated by police.

“This is another senseless loss of life stemming from a verbal altercation that escalated into gun violence,” Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said in the release. “Disagreements should never end with someone losing their life. We continue to urge members of our community to walk away, de-escalate conflict and choose peaceful solutions rather than resorting to violence.”
