Ford has issued a relatively large recall for the Mustang, with nearly 150,000 examples of the pony car potentially affected by a wiring harness ground connection failure. This could result in various vehicle symptoms, the most serious being a loss of drive power. With this new recall, the first of the current S650 Mustangs—those being the 2024 models—now have 12 total recalls to their name. Fortunately, the number of Mustang recalls have gradually declined since the current generation launched, but the latest one adds to an industry-leading number of recalls for the automaker.

Ford Mustang Recall In Detail
Here’s a snapshot of the Ford Mustang recall:

- Total units affected: 148,663
- Key cause: Wiring harness ground connection failure
- Warning signs: Loss of motive power, inoperable headlights, inoperable windshield washer system, loss of air conditioning, loss of engine cooling fan
The detailed was published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In it, the automaker reports that a durability test failure of two broken eyelets on a 2027 Ford Mustang was picked up. This led to an analysis and the eventual recall.
“In affected vehicles, the engine compartment wiring harness ground eyelet terminals may experience fatigue fracture,” states the recall report. “Depending on which ground eyelet fractures, this condition may result in a loss of motive power, loss of right and/or left headlamps, loss of windshield washer fluid pump function, loss of air conditioning, and/or an inoperable engine cooling fan.”
This is the second recent recall to affect the Mustang’s wipers. Last month, over 67,000 examples of the muscle car were recalled for defective wiper motors.
A review of global field data found eight warranty claims related to this wiring harness fault, with four occurring in vehicles that were only on the road for under three months. However, the automaker isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.

What Owners Must Do Now
The engine compartment wiring harness ground terminals will be replaced free of charge, but owners will have to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have this done. Interim letters informing owners of the safety risk were due to be mailed on August 31, 2026. However, the remedy will only be available in March 2027, so owners will need to monitor their Mustangs for any of the conditions described above between now and then.
Ford’s customer service is available at 1-866-436-7332 for more information. As of August 28, 2026, owners can use their vehicle identification numbers on the NHTSA’s site to find out if their vehicle is affected by the recall.
Ford is now up to 67 U.S. recalls in 2026, well ahead of all other automakers. Next in line is Stellantis on 30, General Motors on 22, and Toyota on 21. Ford has defended the number of recalls, saying they form part of the manufacturer’s proactive safety strategy, with many issues identified internally before customers are impacted by them.
