This SC city transforms for Halloween — it even changes its name

While the city of Conway waits to see if it will be deemed the merriest Christmas city by the Hallmark Channel, it’s going about its regular holiday business.

And that’s the all-out extravaganza that is Halloween. They’ve even renamed themselves Halloween, SC.

You get the idea that the only answer to a new idea there is “Let’s.”

What to do in Halloween, S.C. in October

There are events for every age, from story times to a pirate ship for youngsters to pub crawls and music for older folks.

There are different levels of scary houses and even a coffin race.

Sadly some events are already sold out, notably the Conway Ghost Walk on Main Street and the Halloween “Shiver” Cruise.

Some events go all month long — like the Wicked Crawl for Cancer to support the CMC Foundation Cancer Care Fund and photos with your favorite horror legend. The cancer fundraiser is in its fourth year and involves certain businesses creating and selling festive drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). All the proceeds directly benefit local community members, the city says on its website.

On Thursdays through Sundays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. you can have a frightful photo session at The Creation Station on Laurel Street.

The Creation Station is a makerspace and event where people “work, experiment, mess around, and most importantly learn” throughout the year. They have all sorts of programs including woodworking, painting, coding, metalworking, and ceramics.

And, they attract Horror Legends. Come get your photo, they say, then warn, “Just don’t turn your back.”

Now this is one not everybody is suited for — Elm Street Asylum, which organizers say is “NOT for the faint of heart.”

“For those looking for the most intense experience in the Fear Factory, Elm Street Asylum takes the scares up several notches,” the website says. “Dark corridors, startling encounters and unsettling surprises await those brave enough to enter.”

Intense and scary, they say.

But if you like your Halloween a little tamer you can go to other Fear Factory Haunted Attractions, including Conway Haunted Manor (Family Friendly, 5–10 p.m.) and Kingston Hallow Spooky Maze (Family Friendly, 5–10 p.m.). Check the website for the dates and check their Facebook page for reactions from patrons. Lots of videos.

And then there’s the Graveyard Grand Prix Coffin Races Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Town Green in downtown Conway. This is the second year for the event, hosted by the Conway Chamber of Commerce, in which homemade, human-powered “coffins” race through the streets of historic downtown Conway.

Where’s how it works — five people on each team — a rider who plays The Ghost, and four pushers to guide the coffin on wheels.

Conway also wants its Hallmark Christmas cred

Conway was one of 25 towns selected by the Hallmark Channel as a representation of a Hallmark holiday. One town will win, with the selection being announced around Halloween.

Adam Emrick, city administrator of Conway, said his city is a holiday celebration city, not just Christmas.

“Conway celebrates every holiday like no other city, earning the title of The Holiday Capital of South Carolina,” he said.

The town that wins will have the opportunity to serve as a filming location for a Hallmark movie, the Hallmark Channel said.
