A Charleston County man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted murder after he shot a U.S. Army veteran four times while attempting to rob him at gunpoint.

A jury Thursday found Jalen Lee Brothers, 25, guilty of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Judge Roger M. Young sentenced Brothers to the maximum 30 years.
The victim of the shooting, who was not named in a Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s press release issued Sept. 4, was in a coma for several weeks and spent 97 days in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds to his head, arm, and chest. He survived his injuries and testified at Brothers’ trial.
“There’s no doubt the grit of this Army veteran saved his life,” said Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson in a statement. “If Brothers had his way, this would have been a murder case.”
On April 15, 2023, Brothers approached the victim as he was sitting in his vehicle. Brothers attempted to rob him at gunpoint, prosecutors said. The victim, a veteran of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, tried to disarm Brothers, but Brothers regained control of the gun and fired four shots, striking the victim in the head, arm and twice in the chest, according to the release.

The victim was able to give police a description of Brothers after the shooting, which led to his 2023 arrest.
During the pursuit for Brothers, which entailed a brief foot chase, police recovered his backpack and found a firearm and documents bearing Brothers’ name inside, according to the release.
Assistant Solicitor for the Ninth Circuit Andrew Hulshult said the victim’s testimony along with forensic evidence helped to secure Brothers’ conviction.
He thanked the North Charleston Police Department, as well as Judge Young, “for imposing a just sentence that reflects the depravity and extreme violence of this crime.”
