Tractor trailer driver killed in early-morning crash on I-95, SC cops say

One person was killed Tuesday in an early morning crash involving a tractor trailer on Interstate 95, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 4:15 a.m. on the northbound side of I-95 in Clarendon County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.

A 2021 Freightliner tractor trailer was driving north on I-95, according to Bennett. At the 100-mile marker the tractor trailer ran off the left side of the road and crashed into a guardrail before coming to a stop in the southbound lanes of I-95, Bennett said.

The tractor trailer driver died at the scene, according to Bennett. The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

Bennett said the driver was the only person in the tractor trailer, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt, or if the wreck caused a traffic jam on I-95.

Information about what caused the tractor trailer to veer into the median was not available, but the wreck is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 621 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 17 people have died in Clarendon County crashes this year, and 11 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
