A child was detained Monday after being found with a weapon in class at a middle school in South Carolina, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 12:30 p.m., the school resource officer at E.L. Wright Middle School was notified by school administration that a 7th grade student had displayed a stun gun in class, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. The Richland 2 school is at 2740 Alpine Road in Columbia, neat Exit 17 on I-77.
The officer secured the stun gun and the student, who was not publicly identified because of their age, was petitioned for possession of a weapon on school grounds and transferred to their parent’s custody, according to the release.
No injuries were reported.
There was no word if the student pointed the weapon at anyone or made any threats.

“This is a reminder to parents to check your students’ backpacks,” Sheriff Leon Lott said in the release. “We have zero tolerance for weapons entering our schools.”
