A manufacturer is set for a major expansion in the Midlands, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and a host of new jobs.

The Okonite Company, which manufactures cable and wire, will expand its operations in Orangeburg County, according to a Tuesday release from Gov. Henry McMaster’s office. The expansion will include a $400 million investment and create 105 new jobs, the announcement said.
“Okonite’s expansion in Orangeburg County is a testament to the economic opportunities and skilled workforce available here in the Palmetto State,” McMaster said in a statement. “We are pleased to see the company continue to invest in South Carolina and create 105 new jobs in Orangeburg County.”
Okonite was founded in 1878 and, per Tuesday’s release, is “one of the oldest insulators of electrical wire and cable in the U.S., supporting a variety of industries including electric utility, oil and gas, railroad, and chemical.”
The company will build a new 552,000-square-foot plant on its existing property at 2276 Rowesville Road in Orangeburg, the governor’s office noted, looking to meet growing demand for high-voltage cable.

Construction will start later this year, and the project will take two-to-three years to complete.
“We thank the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Orangeburg County Development Commission and the city of Orangeburg for their invaluable help and prompt actions in making our expansion possible,” Okonite CEO David Sokira noted in a statement.
