One man was shot and another is in an SC jail, Richland County sheriff says

One person was shot Wednesday and another was arrested, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Alexander Wight, 40, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said Thursday in a news release.

The charges stem from Wednesday, when deputies responded to the 1000 block of Beatty Road following a report of a shooting at about 10:45 a.m., according to the release.

While deputies were responding, the victim who had been shot in the upper body arrived at the sheriff’s department substation at 1019 Beatty Road, according to the release. That’s in the St. Andrews area of Columbia, near the intersection with Broad River Road.

Deputies provided aid to the victim until EMS took him to a local hospital, the sheriff’s department said. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

A name and description of the shooting suspect, later identified as Wight, were provided to deputies, and he was located near the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

Wight made statements admitting to the shooting and was placed under arrest, according to the release.

There was no word about a motive for the gunfire, or if Wight and the victim knew each other prior to the shooting.

Wight was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where he’s awaiting a bond hearing, the sheriff’s department said.

Following a bond hearing, Wight is scheduled to return to court Nov. 20, Richland County judicial records show.
