On Oct. 7, Stephen Austin Chavis was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston County, SLED said in a news release. The 27-year-old Johns Island resident was charged with misconduct in office, according to the release.

The charge stems from an Aug. 28 incident, according to an affidavit. Chavis was on duty as a member of the Charleston Police Department when he responded to a call for a welfare check at a Charleston home, the affidavit shows.

While going to check on the resident, Chavis “received oral sex from the resident,” who was the subject of the welfare check, the affidavit said.

Charleston police asked SLED to lead an investigation.

A $25,000 personal recognizance bond was set the same day that Chavis was arrested, and he’s been released, jail records show. Chavis is scheduled to return to court Nov. 20, with another appearance slated for March 19, 2027, according to Charleston County judicial records.

The case will be prosecuted by the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
