Four teens charged with attempted murder after shooting in SC, sheriff says

Four teenagers were charged with multiple crimes, including attempted murder, following a shooting and chase Tuesday in South Carolina, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

The teens were wanted following a shooting in the 600 block Crestmont Road, the sheriff’s department said Wednesday in a news release. That’s in a residential part of Columbia, near Lake Carolina off of Hardscrabble Road.

A man was shot in the upper body, and as of Tuesday he was in stable condition, according to the sheriff’s department. Further information on his condition was not available.

Responding deputies spoke with witnesses who were able to provide a description of a vehicle believed to have been used by the shooting suspects, according to the release.

Deputies were circulating the area when a vehicle matching the witnesses’ description was seen near Hardscrabble Road and Sloan Road, the sheriff’s department said. Deputies tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver ignored the attempted traffic stop, leading to a chase, according to the release.

The pursuit ensued and ended in the 100 block of Winterberry Lane, where several people ran from the vehicle, the sheriff’s department said. The abandoned vehicle was left in drive and rolled into a house, causing damage, according to the release.

Deputies pursued the suspects on foot and a track involving the department’s K-9 units was started, according to the release. Deputies located four suspects identified as 19-year-olds Kylen Barze and Lawrence Scott, as well as 18-year-olds Jairus McClary and Roy Jackson Jr., the sheriff’s department said.

All four were arrested and booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release.

Barze, identified as the driver, was charged with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights and siren, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, malicious injury to property and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, the sheriff’s department said.

Scott was charged with attempted murder and attempted armed robbery, according to the release.

Jackson was charged with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said.

McClary was charged with attempted murder and attempted armed robbery, according to the release.

No bond has been set for any of the teens, and all remain locked up, jail records show.
