After the 49ers scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to take the lead, Chenal blocked the extra point attempt and kept the Chiefs’ deficit at three points (16-13). And on the first drive of the game, Chenal forced San Francisco star Christian McCaffrey to fumble and the Chiefs recovered.
And who could forget what Chenal did during the Super Bowl championship parade following KC’s 25-22 win? He climbed up a double-decker bus from the outside to get to the top of the vehicle, showing off his freakish athletic talent.
That helped make him a favorite among Chiefs fans, who were saddened to see Chenal suffer a neck injury Sunday during the Commanders’ win over the Seahawks. Chenal signed a free-agent deal with Washington earlier this year.
After the game, Commanders coach Dan Quinn provided an update on Chenal.
“First, let’s start with an update on Leo. He’s at the hospital,” Quinn said, per Sports Illustrated. “He does have feeling in his extremities, undergoing further testing as we go through tonight. But we’re definitely thinking of him. He’s a great teammate. We love him. So anytime a guy gets banged up like that, you’re just thinking of him and pulling for him as much as you can.”
On Monday morning, NFL insider Jordan Schultz provided an update that included the results of a scan Chenal had and what’s next for him.

“Commanders LB Leo Chenal, who was taken off the field with a scary-looking injury on Sunday, will undergo season-ending surgery this morning for a fracture in his neck, per sources,” Schultz wrote on X.
Schultz reiterated what Quinn said: Chenal has feeling in all of his extremities. In response to that post, fans shared messages of support for Chenal, praying for a full recovery.
