One person killed in fiery crash that left another hospitalized, SC coroner says

A woman was killed Monday night in South Carolina when the car she was driving was involved in a fiery crash, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:10 p.m. in the Monetta area of Aiken County, Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

A 2019 Honda Civic was driving north on Monetta Street South East, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Jehosse Drive South East the Honda ran off the right side of the road, Bennett said.

The Honda crashed into a tree and burst into flames, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

The driver, who has not been publicly identified because of the severity of the burns she suffered in the wreck, died at the scene, Ables said.

A passenger in the Honda was injured and taken to an area hospital, according to Bennett. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either the driver or passenger were wearing seatbelts.

Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available, but the collision remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. An autopsy will be performed this week in Newberry, Ables said.

Through Monday, at least 603 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 19 people have died in Aiken County crashes this year, and 23 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
