Shooting victim who was found behind wheel of a car is identified by SC coroner

The South Carolina man who was killed over the weekend was publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office Monday.

William Anderson IV, a 24-year-old from Columbia, is the man who died as a result of a fatal shooting and crash on Sept. 12, the coroner’s office said.

On Saturday, deputies with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department heard gunfire from a nearby parking lot at the Colony Apartments, according to the Columbia Police Department. The deputies responded and found a vehicle that had crashed into a building about a third of a mile away in the 6300 block of Bailey Street, police said. That’s in a part of Columbia between S.C. 277 and Beltline Boulevard.

The driver, later identified as Anderson, had an apparent gunshot wound, according to police.

Deputies provided emergency medical assistance, including CPR, before EMS took Anderson to Prisma Health Richland hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word about the shooter, or shooters, or the number of people involved. Information about a motive for the gunfire was not available.

No arrests have been reported, but the homicide is being investigated by police and the coroner’s office. Police said they have worked to conduct interviews, review evidence and establish a timeline of events.
