Tractor trailer and two cars run over person on I-26, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed Monday on Interstate 26 when they were run over by three vehicles, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The early morning collision happened at the 105-mile marker on the westbound side of I-26, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover. That’s near the area called Malfunction Junction, which is close to the line that separates Lexington and Richland counties.

At about 4:05 a.m., a 2024 Volvo tractor trailer, a 2025 Toyota Camry and a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu were driving west on I-26 when each of the vehicles hit a pedestrian who was in the road, according to Glover.

The pedestrian died, Glover said. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.

Glover said that none of the drivers involved in the wreck were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Information about what led to the deadly collision was not available, but it remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

Through Aug. 31, at least 580 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 20 people have died in Lexington County crashes this year, and 40 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
