Tractor trailer driver killed in crash on I-20, South Carolina cops say

A driver was killed late Wednesday night when a tractor trailer was in a crash with a pickup truck on a stretch of Interstate 20 in the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened on the eastbound side of I-20, at the 109-mile marker in Lee County, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.

Both a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and a 1998 Peterbilt tractor trailer were driving east in side-by-side lanes, according to Davidson. The tractor trailer then changed lanes and collided with the pickup, sending both vehicles off the right side of I-20, where both trucks crashed into trees and overturned, Davidson said.

The tractor trailer driver died from injuries suffered in the wreck, according to Davidson.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the tractor trailer driver.

Davidson did not say if the pickup driver was hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seatbelts, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 558 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least nine people have died in Lee County crashes this year, and seven people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
