August was an exceptionally hot month for South Carolina, with many days seeing above-normal temperatures statewide. More recently, the Gamecocks played the hottest game in Williams-Brice Stadium history against Kent State in their scorching season opener.
It’s not looking to get cooler anytime soon, either.
According to the , most of the nation, including SC, is likely to see above-average temperatures for the next several weeks. That also comes with a higher likelihood of rain throughout the state.
But will the heat persist all the way through fall into the coming winter months? Is there a chance that the Carolinas will see anything resembling snow this year?
The Farmers’ Almanac, an American periodical known for its long-range weather predictions, released its 2026-2027 Winter Weather Forecast, revealing the typical weather to be expected across the country toward the end of the year.

Winter weather will probably contrast sharply in different parts of the country, due to the ongoing El Niño that is getting stronger by the day.

The naturally occurring climate event is highly influential in SC’s weather, especially during the winter. As a result, the Palmetto State will likely see much wetter and stormier conditions than normal, with occasional surges of cold air.
Flash flooding and severe weather are also likely in SC due to El Niño.
When that colder air meets abundant moisture, some storms could produce sleet, freezing rain, or heavy, wet snow, the group said. It’s unlikely to bring a lot of snow in the state, but at least residents can expect some relief from the consistent heat during the last couple of months.
How does Farmers’ Almanac create its forecasts
The Farmers’ Almanac is the longest-running periodical in the country and has been releasing long-range forecasts since 1818. The group has used the same formula to make its predictions since then, using a combination of sunspot cycles, lunar position, tidal pull, and historical pattern weighting.
The organization reports an accuracy rate of 80-85% on regional outlooks. Independent reviews may say that the actual accuracy percentage is lower, but still well above chance.
