Unofficial results Tuesday night showed Shelton Yonce on top with 45% of the vote, compared to 39% for Dana Homesley’s and 15% for Crystal Baker.
Yonce will take his seat once the election results are certified, but then will face the voters again in November along with two other board members for a full four-year term.
The race for school board was largely overshadowed by the statewide primary. Voters on Tuesday were also choosing candidates in the Republican and Democratic primaries, while voters in the school district had to select a separate ballot for the nonpartisan board.
The three candidates in Tuesday’s election were running to replace Beth Shealy, who was the school board’s vice chair before she resigned when her husband, Chan Shealy, was charged with possessing child sex abuse material, triggering the special election to replace her.

Homesley is a claims adjuster at the S.C. Association of Counties. Yonce is an agent with ERA Realty. Baker is program director for the nonprofit Gamechangers.
