Tilly, a 2-year-old pug, was brought into Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital in Phoenix, fighting for her life in late May.
“Severely anemic, underweight, dehydrated and largely unresponsive, Tilly’s condition was critical,” the nonprofit said in a news release.
The center’s veterinarians determined Tilly needed an emergency blood transfusion to survive and ended up turning to another patient for support. While common in specialty veterinary hospitals, blood transfusions are not a typical treatment method due to their high costs, according to Arizona Humane.
Rowlan, a 7-year-old American pitbull terrier, also rescued as an injured stray, was healthy enough to donate blood, according to Arizona Humane.
Rowlan gives Tilly ‘lifesaving transfusion,’ nonprofit says
The dog “gave Tilly the lifesaving transfusion she desperately needed, and her condition began improving almost immediately as her vital signs stabilized,” the news release reads.
“Seeing one rescued dog help save another is a powerful reminder of why this work matters,” President & CEO of Arizona Humane, Dr. Steven Hansen, said in a statement. “Rowlan’s blood donation gave Tilly the lifesaving boost she needed, but her recovery was made possible by an entire team working together.”

Hansen added that Arizona Humane is a “trauma hospital first, which means our veterinary team is equipped to provide advanced medical care for homeless pets facing life-threatening conditions.”
The facility added that their work is only possible through community support and donations.
Rowlan has fully recovered from his injuries and is now thriving at his forever home in Phoenix. Meanwhile, Tilly continues to receive care with one of the veterinarians who helped save her life, the nonprofit said.
