A flood watch is in effect for Horry County until 8 a.m. Saturday as a stalled cold front along the coast could produce heavy rain and excessive runoff.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington predicts anywhere from two to four inches of rain, with up to five inches in localized areas through Saturday night. Higher totals of rainfall are expected in southeast North Carolina.
Because of Horry County’s persistent severe drought, hard rain will likely result in runoff to streams, creeks and rivers, with potential for flooding in low-lying areas.
Rain could help with the drought, but conditions are likely to persist, according to the U.S. seasonal drought outlook.

According to the NWS Wilmington’s Friday forecasters’ discussion, models “suggest that the sea breeze will interact with this front, providing a good convergence boundary for showers and storms to quickly pop along the coastline sometime between noon and 3 p.m. this afternoon.”
Conditions are expected to dry out by Sunday, and the heat will return. Triple digit heat indices are expected on Monday.
