This trendy development near Columbia has a new restaurant. What to know

There’s a new restaurant in a busy commercial corridor in the Midlands.

Konnichiwa, a Japanese eatery with sushi, steak and more, recently opened its doors at 4605 Forest Drive in Forest Acres. That’s in the trendy Cardinal Crossing mixed-use development that includes a number of restaurants and businesses.

The new Konnichiwa is in a 5,000-square-foot space that formerly was home to Poogan’s Southern Kitchen, which closed in 2024.

There are more than a dozen Konnichiwa restaurants across South Carolina and North Carolina. That includes two other locations in the Midlands, one at 5086-A Sunset Blvd. in Lexington and another at 7420 Broad River Road in Irmo.

The Forest Acres Konnichiwa is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, per a Google listing for the restaurant. The menu at Konnichiwa includes a roster of Japanese favorites including sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, hibachi rice bowls, miso soup, ramen noodle soup and much more.

Cardinal Crossing is a $60 million mixed-use development off Forest Drive that has more than 250 apartments and a host of businesses and retailers. Among the businesses in the complex are Handel’s ice cream, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Surcheros restaurant, Clean Juice, Lazy Daisy coffee shop, and Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, among a number of others.

The Forest Drive area of Forest Acres is a bustling thoroughfare lined with stores, restaurants and other businesses. About 30,000 cars per day travel down Forest Drive, according to state Department of Transportation statistics.
