A South Carolina woman who was president of a Lexington County school’s parent-teacher organization confessed to stealing thousands of the group’s money for her personal benefit, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

Cassandra Jensen Hanvey, a 36-year-old Lexington resident, was charged with breach of trust, the sheriff’s department said Tuesday in a news release.
Hanvey was the president of the Carolina Springs Elementary School PTO, according to the release. The Lexington 1 school is at 6340 Platt Springs Road in Lexington.
“We were notified by Carolina Springs Elementary School that Hanvey confessed to using PTO funds for personal use,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in the release.
Between June 2023 and June 2026, Hanvey fraudulently spent more than $20,000, according to the release. Information about how she spent the money, or if more unspent money was embezzled, was not available.

Hanvey surrendered to law enforcement officers and was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center Sunday morning, according to the release. She was released on a personal recognizance bond Monday, the sheriff’s department said.
If convicted on the felony charge, Hanvey faces a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a fine, according to South Carolina law.
