Man charged with murder after another was shot, South Carolina sheriff says

One man is dead and another is in jail following a weekend shooting in South Carolina, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

James Canaday, a 38-year-old Neeses resident, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.

The charge stems from a Saturday shooting where a 50-year-old man was killed, according to the release.

Deputies responded to a Kyzer Brown Road location where they found the 50-year-old man’s body after he had been fatally shot, the sheriff’s office said. That’s in Springfield, in a part of Orangeburg County between U.S. 321 and S.C. 4.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the shooting victim.

No other injuries were reported.

After deputies discovered the body, Canaday was taken into custody and charged, according to the release.

No bond has been set for Canaday, who is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 13, following a bond hearing, Orangeburg County judicial records show.

Information about a motive for the shooting, or any prior connection between Canaday and the victim, was not available.

“None of this makes one bit of sense — at all,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in the release. “There is absolutely no reason under the sun that could justify this individual’s actions.”
