Woman who pointed gun at police killed in shooting, South Carolina cops say

A woman was recently killed after she pointed a gun at Upstate police officers, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said Tuesday in a news release.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said 25-year-old Brianna Skiesha Zara Edwards is the woman who died in the Aug. 30 shooting, WYFF reported.

The Spartanburg Police Department responded to a call for service at the Georgetown Village Apartments, SLED said in a news release. That’s on Kensington Drive in Spartanburg.

When officers arrived, they encountered a woman, later identified as Edwards, who walked out of her apartment and onto the breezeway where she pointed a handgun at the officers, SLED said. One of the officers shot the woman, according to the release.

Edwards was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, SLED said.

No law enforcement officers were hurt, and no other injuries were reported by SLED.

Spartanburg police asked SLED to lead the investigation, which is ongoing.

Police said that the officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, WSPA reported.

This shooting was the first of the year involving Spartanburg police, but there have been 24 more with other law enforcement agencies in South Carolina, SLED said in the release. There were 45 shootings in 2025 that involved law enforcement officers, according to the release.
