SUV driver killed in head-on crash with truck on South Carolina road, cops say

One person was killed Tuesday in the Upstate when an SUV and pickup truck were involved in a head-on crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 9 a.m. in Anderson County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 2006 Nissan Rogue SUV was driving north on Breazeale Road, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Midway Road the SUV crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with a 2025 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was driving south on Breazeale Road, Ridgeway said.

The SUV driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway. The Anderson County Coroner’s Office said that 49-year-old Piedmont resident Waymond Ray Mashburn was the driver who died, WYFF reported.

Ridgeway said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Information about what caused the SUV to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 580 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 27 people have died in Anderson County crashes this year, and 37 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
