An overnight lane closure on Interstate 77 will be sending Midlands drivers on a detour.

The S.C. Department of Transportation announced they would be closing the southbound portion of I-77 near Blythewood beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The closure will allow work to be done on a new interchange at Exit 26, near the site of the future Scout Motors plant.
The closure will affect southbound traffic between Exit 27 and Exit 24. All lanes will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday, with plans to reopen the interstate to traffic at 6 a.m. Sept. 16. If inclement weather disrupts plans, the closure and opening will be pushed back 24 hours, from 9 p.m. Sept. 16 to 6 a.m. Sept. 17.

While the interstate is closed, drivers will be directed to take Exit 27 to Blythewood Road and go roughly a mile to the east to Main Street/Highway 21. Drivers can then go south on Highway 21 for three and a half miles to rejoin I-77.
Northbound traffic on Interstate 77 will not be affected by the closure, DOT said.
