A 61-year-old Columbia woman died Wednesday morning after she was struck by a commercial train along Two Notch Road, according to the Forest Acres Police Department.

The collision happened shortly after 5:22 a.m. near the S351 mile marker, according to a news release.
The train engineer told investigators he saw the woman walking on the tracks, sounded the horn and activated the train’s emergency braking system. He also saw her attempt to move off the tracks before she was struck, the release said.
The woman, who was known to frequent the Two Notch Road and Decker Boulevard area, suffered significant injuries and died at the scene, according to the release.

“It took approximately a half mile for this train to come to a complete stop after the emergency brakes were initiated,” Forest Acres Police Chief Don Robinson said in the release. “If you are on those tracks, you do not have the time you may think you have to get out of the way.”
The Richland County Coroner’s Office, CSX and Amtrak Police were notified, the release said. The investigation remains ongoing.

The tracks were cleared and reopened, according to the release.
