Abortion isn’t banned or protected on the federal level. South Carolina candidates for U.S. Senate have very different views on whether the procedure should be protected nationwide or further restricted in every state.

Annie Andrews, Democratic candidate
Andrews says on her campaign website she would “fight to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade.” The landmark 1973 case, which was overturned in 2022, established the constitutional right to an abortion until the fetus was viable.
“I believe that we must restore a woman’s right to make health care decisions about her own body,” Andrews said in a campaign speech May 30.

Darline Graham, Republican candidate
Graham described herself as “for life” while campaigning for U.S. Senate.
“One of my core convictions is my belief in protecting the sanctity of human life at every stage,” Graham said in a social media post July 22. “… I will not waver in my support for life, pregnant women and families.”
A spokesperson for Graham’s campaign previously told The State the senator supports South Carolina’s ban on most abortions, with exceptions, after a heartbeat is detected and would back a similar restriction nationwide.
