Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular coastal destinations in South Carolina, but locals and visitors alike sometimes know it by another name: Dirty Myrtle.

According to a new study, the moniker may not be entirely unearned. Reusable water bottle company Just Bottle analyzed Tripadvisor reviews of South Carolina beaches to find the destinations where visitors complain the most about litter, and Myrtle Beach topped the list.
Scraping reviews for keywords like debris, dirty, garbage, litter, smelly and trash, Just Bottle found the terms mentioned 354 times in more than 5,000 Myrtle Beach reviews, with 96 “trash” counts, 95 “dirty” appearances and 42 “smelly” inclusions. That comes out to 70.4 terms mentioned per 1,000 reviews.
It’s not all bad news for Myrtle Beach, though. According to the study, nearly 65% of reviewers rated the beach as excellent.
“Among the reviews analyzed, Myrtle Beach showed the highest concentration of litter-related complaints, significantly outpacing the rest of the beaches in the ranking,” Just Bottle cofounder Millie Mallett said in a statement. “As one of the most visited and well-known beach destinations in the area, its popularity means even minor cleanliness issues can be noticed by a large number of visitors.”

Two other Grand Strand destinations, both in North Myrtle Beach, also cracked the top five. Despite having just 13 keywords mentioned, Windy Hill Beach came in at No. 3. The beach only has 206 Tripadvisor reviews featured in the study, which comes out to 63.1 trashy terms used per 1,000 reviews.
However, like Myrtle Beach, most reviewers report loving their Windy Hill visits, with more than 68% giving the beach an excellent rating.
With even fewer reviews than Windy Hill, Crescent Beach took fourth place with just nine key terms among its 151 reviews. Although nearly 66% of reviewers describe Crescent Beach as excellent, it ranks with 59.6 keywords for every 1,000 reviews.
