Woman who was killed in hit-and-run crash identified by South Carolina coroner

A woman who was recently killed in a hit-and-run crash in South Carolina was publicly identified Tuesday by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Janyne Renee Mbeng, a 37-year-old from Cayce, is the pedestrian who died in what Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.

The hit-and-run collision happened at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 23, the coroner’s office said in a news release.

Mbeng was walking in the road in the 1800 block of Frink Street when she was struck by an unknown vehicle, according to the release. That’s in a part of Lexington County between U.S. 321 and the 12th Street Ext.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Mbeng did not stop at the scene or report the accident, Fisher said.

Mbeng was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead because of the injuries she suffered in the collision, according to the release.

Along with the coroner’s office, members of the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Cayce Police Department are investigating the deadly wreck.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has information about it, is asked to call police at 803-550-9536, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.

“Even information that may seem insignificant could help investigators piece together what happened,” police said.

Through Sunday, 580 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 19 people have died in Lexington County crashes this year, and 40 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
